7 writers, 7 directors, 25 actors, designers, and musicians + 48 hours = 14 world premiere plays
14/48 Leicester is the Leicester Satellite of “The world’s quickest theatre festival” in which 14 new plays are written, directed and performed within a 48 hour period. It is a ‘live brief’ networking opportunity, a new writing festival, theatre stripped back to it’s raw roots, and it is the most fun, challenging, and invigorating experience for both the artists and audiences that make it possible.
I had the pleasure of directing 2 plays for this year’s festival in Leicester, ‘In and Out of Bed’ by Heidi McElrath and ‘Let Me In, Let Me In’ by Shaun Dyer. It’s a whirlwind experience trying to coordinate actors, writers, set designers, costume designers, lighting technicians, the band and everyone else involved over such a short period of time, after only picking up the script for the first time at 9am that morning. But boy is it utterly exhilarating and heaps of fun, and the quality of all the work produced over both evenings was remarkable.
14/48 returns to Leicester in May 2017. If you’ve never attended before, then make sure not to miss out this year – it promises to be an evening of pure hilarity and brilliance.
