Reinterment of Richard III – 10th Anniversary Documentary
Most would agree that two of the most iconic moments in Leicester’s recent history are Leicester City’s historic Premier League win in 2016 and the discovery of King Richard III’s remains beneath a city centre car park in 2012. Richard was reburied at Leicester Cathedral in 2015, and this year, to mark the 10 year anniversary of his reinterment, Leicester celebrated in style with a three-week programme of spectacular events.
One such event was The Roots of our Tree, produced by Inspirate, which brought 300 young people together to process through the streets of Leicester city centre on March 12th. Held high above their heads were handmade leaves decorated with artwork that celebrated their heritage and Leicester’s rich cultural roots. At the end of the procession the young people delivered their leaves to the Richard III Visitor Centre where theatre designer Tom Cleaver ( Mr. Cleaver’s Monsters) began assembling them into a stunning illuminated tree installation.

The Roots of our Tree procession and installation launched the Light Up Leicester festival which transformed the streets into a glowing celebration of art and culture.
As part of the project, I directed a short documentary capturing the lead-up to the event and the procession itself. The film will be screened at both the Richard III Visitor Centre and Leicester Cathedral. Working alongside local production company Rendah Films, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed revisiting Richard III’s story while celebrating the diversity and multiculturalism Leicester is famous for.
